I have been wanting to get back into making costume dresses for a while but I always seem to get distracted by other projects. I have decided that now is the perfect time to get stuck into the world of costuming. After all it is the reason I became hooked on dressmaking in the first place.
It didn't take me long to think up what outfit I would like to make, probably having lots of vintage dressmaking books lying around has influenced me in my choice. The dress is the Cha Cha dress! My favorite dress from the movie grease and the one that has always stuck in my mind from watching the movie when I was younger.
For the dress I have found a great pattern to use in the book 'Gertie's new book for better sewing' She has lots of great vintage outfits in the book to make and the one pictured above is a perfect base for the Cha Cha dress.
I will make the bodice as shown in the book only I will add the halter strap and the blue ruffle at the front. At the moment I'm guessing I will use Tulle for the ruffle but I will be experimenting and researching to get the right effect. When you watch the film you will also notice that the dress has lots of sparkly sequins attached. I'm not sure if I will add those yet as it would take a long time to do and it's hard to see in the film where and how they are attached.
For the skirt I will be drafting my own as described in Gertie's book. All I need to do then is attach it to the bodice. The dress will be lined and more of the tulle will be gathered and sewn on the lining in layers so that the skirt puffs out like in the film.
My biggest challenge at the moment will be finding a fabric that is similar to the one in the film. I'm thinking it will be some kind of silk or satin.
I'll keep you posted on my progress with the dress. I can't wait to get started!
